Statement of Intent

I grew up around my dad's boating workshop and seen it change overtime. It's old, and falling apart. The rusty junk piles get higher and prove to be an eyesore from the road. But up close tangled in their cables and wires is something beautiful and I wonder why it took this long for me to rediscover it.

What I Rediscovered this Week.

I used to measure my height with this shelf

Pink Umbrella

Complex Wiring in an Outboard

Oil drums make great firepits

The Remains of tools lost somewhere on the property.

Smoking and Flammable Products Don't matter to the boys welding....

  1. The only weak images you have posted so far are the first and sixth from your first post. compositionally they aren't as interesting as the others. The first image is too dark and the angle just looks like a snapshot not a planned out photo. The sixth image suffers from the same problem angle wise, its just not as interesting as the photo below it of the same thing.
I love most of your photos, you're getting great detail and using unique angles (such as the measuring stick and the outboard wiring) which is pretty much required to draw attention to things is such a busy environment. Also the items with more color make for much more interesting images so keep looking for brightly colored trash. Great start.

  2. I love your new idea. The captions do give me a direction in the picture and I don't mind it. I do enjoy the close ups of the different objects including the ruler and the cigarettes. To me it's a much more interesting photo. The pink umbrella would not work for me without the caption b/c I wouldn't know what I was looking for that meant something to you in your childhood. It's the weaker one in my opinion, but with the caption, it can stay. I absolutely love the "fallen tools" wall. Great picture, great caption, and it works well with the theme.

  3. The images you are capturing really are beautiful. I feel like your concept for the book is closely related to my 84days project. There really is something more to things we normally deem as trash or trashy. Your concept for me is really strong.

The only image that isn't working as well as the others is the fourth image. I think it is just too bright in comparison to the others and I want it to be a more close up of the stuff coming out of the barrel.

The rest of the images are working nicely. I really like the first image from this week. And I think the captions for each image add to the concept, so keep those.

  4. The new images are really cool, I like number six the best although I think it may be stronger if we saw it with a little more space.I just think there can be a really interesting story to these tools and where they went, why it is empty. ect.

I think the weakest picture is the one of the cat but that is probably just me nitpicking, and exercising my personal bias against taking pictures of things that are already cute,or beautiful. I really like your idea. Keep it up.

  5. Images are clean with a nice DOF. I dont see how that cat fits in with the ugly and machine stuff. I think printing them in a book is a good idea and the concept of making ugly into beauty is good challenge. One thing I would do it odd cropping/random sizing to bring your focal point in.

  6. All of the pictures are working really well for the book. If I had to pick one I would say maybe the “complex wiring” pic and that’s only because the caption seems a little less personalized than the others. I enjoy the captions on the pics and think they will add a lot of dimension to these photographs of everyday things.

  7. The latest pictures are great. Your earlier work seems less focused than the post from June 7. There is certainly more aesthetic flare. Oil drum firepit is intriguing. And it captures the essence of beauty in old forgotten objects. And so do the other photographs aside from the picture with the cat. Cats aren’t really objects, so it is a difficult fit at least thematically. Each photograph seems well constructed and purposeful with a lovely narrative attached.

  8. I am totally drawn to the personal captions. I think you should expand on the writing and tell us a story! It is a very interesting moment that you are living, rediscovering this place of your history. How is it making you feel--I am starting to be able to guess... Keep it up.
